An Experience to Remember

My thoughts today are about an experience I had on my school bus a few years ago. As a driver, you are trained to know how to spot a student who is being bullied at school. This is what happened:

This student was a sixth grader at my school. She was a very happy and outgoing young lady with a good attitude about life. I noticed a change in her personality. She became distant and withdrawn. She wasn’t as happy as she was before. This went on for a few days until I got the courage to talk to her about it.

On an afternoon driving the kids home from school, and getting to the last bus stop which was hers, I approached her while she was getting off the bus. She was the last student to leave and it was a perfect opportunity to pull her aside. I asked her what was going on and why she didn’t seem as happy as normal. Through her tears she told me she was being bullied at school. When she said that I told her not to cry any more and tomorrow we would get to the bottom of it. I promised her that I would do my best to get the bullying stopped.

The next morning when we arrived at school, we went into the principal’s office and told her what was going on. The principal thanked me for helping. Then this young lady told her who was involved. The principal thanked me again for bringing it to her attention and she would get the bullying stopped.

The difference between the afternoon before visiting the principal and the afternoon after was night and day. She had her happy personality back and her thoughtful kindness. Through this experience, I’m reminded of the scripture that tells us “In as much as ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Our prophet has asked us to reach out and help others where we can. We need to show love to others and be an example to them. Even in this pandemic in our limited circles, we can influence those around us. I know the gospel is true and Heavenly will always help us in this endeavor. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
